CMS Hospital Conditions of Participation (CoPs): Medication Administration, Safe Opioid Use, IV and Blood Administration Webinar


This webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30th from 8 - 10  am MT.


The speaker will discuss the revised Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Condition of Participation (CoPs) standards on safe opioid use, IV medication and blood transfusion.

This is the fifth time this section has been amended in the past few years along with a recent amendment to nursing section 405, which addresses safe injection practices, compounding and beyond use date. The following are also covered: CDC opioid guidelines, Joint Commission final pain management guidelines, federal guidelines for opioid programs, opioid epidemic and required hospital policies and training. The CMS standards on the care of the patient receiving opioids also apply to critical access hospitals.

Sue Dill Calloway has been a nurse attorney and consultant for more than 30 years. Currently, she is president of Patient Safety and Healthcare Education & Consulting. She was previously the chief learning officer for the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation.

Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss the CMS 32 page memo on medication administration and safe opioid use.
  • Discuss how the medications must be administered within three different time frames.
  • Explain that CMS has required policies and education requirements on medication administration and safe opioid use.
  • Discuss the CMS requirements that ensure nurses are competent when giving IV medications or blood transfusions.
  • Identify the CDC-issued opioid prescribing guidelines.

This program is intended for but not limited to CMOs, CNOs, physicians, nurses, quality improvement staff, risk managers, pharmacy staff, compliance officers and legal counsel, ethics committee members, consumer advocates, TJC liaisons, safety officers, behavioral health and psychiatric staff and case managers.
